First we must understand who a Buddha is. He is the human being who understands the problems of life and by striving for long, long periods understands how to escape these problems by attaining Nibbana. Buddha's appear in this world at a time when people have not discovered such states as Nibbana. There are also several kinds of Buddhas that appear in the world. They are Samma Sambuddha- who finds the path to nibbana by himself, but can help others to attain it by his teachings, that is Dhamma. Pacceka Buddha is the person who discovers Nibbana by his own conduct but is unable to help othersto attain it. Arahat Buddha is really a pupil of SammaSammbuddha. who follows his teaching and attain Nibbana but are able to teach others. There are a few concepts we have to understand if we have to understand the life of Buddha. These concepts were understood by the all knowing Buddha and instructedto the rest of the laymen of the world. Some of these concepts are as follows: 1. Rebirth-All beings are born and reborn after death. This applies to all creatures big and small, human or otherwise. No one can see the beginnings of this cycle of births but the end is Nibbana. 2. There are some immeasurable world systems which the present sciences cannot perceive but Buddha has understood this. 3. Time and space are so vast, world systems appear and disappear in very long time periods - ordinary humans cannot fathom such phenomena. 4. There are all forms of beings and worlds. (a) Human world (b) Worlds of deities or devas. These are of different grades and have different life spans and time-periods and have certain life styles and powers different from humans. (c) There are the Hells-animal kingdom and other hells. Here too lifespans and time periods differ from one another. 5. The world or planet like ours begin and end after a very long space of time and this is called a kalpa. This process goes on and on, it appears and disappears. 6. Buddhas appear in these time spaces in the worlds to help ordinary intelligent people to escape the cycle of troublesome births and attain nibbana. 7. In the Kalpa of our present world, five Buddhas are to be born. Kakusanda, Konagama, Kasyapa, GOTHAMA, and Maitriya. Gothama is the fourth whose Dhamma, Sangha are available to us. We are at this state of this world and what we know is what Gothama Buddha has taught. However periods and space and world systems and life cycles and rebirth and rebirth we must take for granted as the All Knowing Buddha has taught us as we ordinary human beings do not have the vision of a Buddha. However if we progress in the path of Nibbana we might understand some of them to some extent. Lord Gouthama Buddha For Children written by Mangala Thero.
